Is Tokyo hosting the Olympic Games in 2020 for the second time?

The PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018 has shown us exciting　competitions. I was moved by the athletes’ smiles and tears the moment when　their great efforts paid off. The next Summer Olympic Games is going to be held in Tokyo in 2020 finally. I’m so excited! Then, Wan-kun (from overseas)

asked me “Isn’t Tokyo hosting the Olympic Games for the first time?”. It isactually the second time. The first Olympic Games in Tokyo was held in 1964.No wonder you don’t know about it.

There is a national holiday called Taiiku no hi meaning health-sports day on　the second Monday of October in Japan. It was originally designated to commemorate the opening day of the first Olympics held in Japan on October 10th, 1964.

At that time, Japan had recovered from the scars of World War II and came　back to being a lively country. The Tokyo Olympics in 1964 radically transformed all of Japan! The Tokaido Line of the Shinkansen and a monorail from Haneda airport to the center of Tokyo were completed just before the opening ceremony. People made everything for the Olympics.There also was the phenomenon of many people buying new color televisions, going from black‐and‐white ones, to watch the competitions!

A total of 93 nations and 5,133 athletes participated in the 1964 Games.By contrast, the last Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro had 207 nations and 11,238 athletes participated.I heard the memories of my parents generation about the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. They told me the women's national volleyball team had a big impact on the competition.They were called The Oriental Witches and won a Gold medal with overwhelming strength. And for Ju-do,which became an official event at this time, Japan won 3 Gold medals. Overall that Japan won a lot of medals, 16 Gold medals: 5 Silver medals and 8 Bronze medals. I’m so proud of it. In the closing ceremony, Japan gave a presentation displaying the word Sayonara (Good bye or See you again) on the electronic scoreboard and sang a big chorus of Auld Lang Syne. The thought of it makes me cry…These wonderful Olympic Games are coming back to Tokyo again. I am thrilled! Now, Tokyo has been preparing for “Omotenashi” the Japanese way of hosting guests. 第23回オリンピック冬季競技大会「平昌オリンピック」で盛り上がりましたね。アスリートのストイックな努力が報われた笑顔や涙に、心震わされる日々でした。そして、2020年にはいよいよ東京オリンピック開催です！　なのに、ワン君は「東京オリンピックってはじめてじゃないの！？」と。確かにはじめての東京オリンピックが開催されたのは1964年。ワン君もニャパンだって生まれていません（苦笑）。

日本には「体育の日」という祝日が10月の第2月曜日にあります。これは元々、1964年10月10日に、日本で初めてのオリンピックが開催されたことにちなんでいます。当時の東京は第二次世界大戦の傷後から見事に復興を果たし、活気を取り戻していました。そこにオリンピック開催が決まり、日本中が大忙しに！　東海道新幹線は開催式直前に完成し、羽田空港と都心をつなぐモノレールだって間に合わせたんです。さすが日本人！！　みんながオリンピックをカラーで見たいと、カラーテレビに買い替える現象も！　東京オリンピック参加国・地域は93、参加人数は5133人。ちなみに前回のリオデジャネイロオリンピックの参加国・地域207、参加人数は11,238人です。

東京オリンピックの思い出を親世代に聞くと「東洋の魔女」と称賛された女子バレーボールの活躍。圧倒的な強さで金メダルを獲得しました。マラソンでは円谷幸吉選手が銅メダル。この時はじめて正式種目となった柔道でも、日本は3つの階級で金メダルを獲得し、レスリング、ボクシング、ウエイトリフティングでも金メダル取りましら。金16個、銀5個、銅8個！すごいですね。東京オリンピックの閉会式では電光掲示板に「SAYONARA」と表示されて、蛍の光が大合唱されたそうです。想像するだけでぐっときます。そんなすごい東京オリンピックが再び！　東京ではおもてなしの準備が着々。どんな夢の祭典になるのか今から待ち遠しいです。ぜひ、日本に見に来てください。
